Myra

My ten year old brother has become a recent fan of Ben Folds and Radiohead. HAHA. I was driving him and I heard this voice from the backseat “Myra, have you heard of Ben Folds or this band called Radiohead? They’re awesome!” Then I explained to him that he’s been hearing those bands his entire life. I just think it’s great that he has good taste in music from such a young age.

I’m still hunting for a job. Waiting to hear back from Nike, Adidas, Netflix, Beaverton City Library and a lot of other places.

I’ve started reading a lot. Right now I’m reading The Little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia. I’ve also checked out Barbara Walters book from the library, Honeymoon in Tehran and some other stuff.

Moving back to Seattle scares me. What if I won’t have friends there anymore? So much can change in a short amount of time. I thought I did a good job of keeping in touch with friends from home but then I realized they’re all away at college and I’m not going to have many people to hang out with while I’m home. I don’t even know when exactly I will be able to move back. Whenever I save up enough money, I guess.

I’m afraid I won’t be able to finish the education I already put so much effort and money into. All of the debt I went into will be a total waste if I don’t graduate from SU or even UW. I didn’t spend all of that money and bust my ass in high school just to graduate from some shitty school in Oregon. I JUST WANT TO GO BACK TO COLLEGE. I did my freshman year at PSU to save money, transferred to Seattle University, did summer quarter at the University of Washington to save money once again, then got screwed over and now I’m living with my parents in Oregon. This isn’t healthy for me. I don’t thrive on change. It’s hard to move four times a year and keep trying to make new friends.

I wrote a letter to SU’s financial aid office and told them that their Jesuit mission of social justice isn’t really being applied in my case. They wrote back and told me they disagree. My dad talked to them and he said “I get the distinct impression that they don’t care if you graduate or not.”

I don’t have money for college because I was born into a middle class family and I can’t get a fucking loan because the economy is so bad. So now I don’t get to have the education I worked so hard for? I KNOW colleges are a business but don’t they have some sort of responsibility to help students get to graduation? It’s not like I was asking for more financial aid - just an extension on paying my tuition bill. I can’t get scholarships because I don’t have amazing grades. I do work hard, I’m just not naturally gifted.

I just can’t believe that everything I worked so hard for has gone to waste.

Coming home makes me think of the Ben Folds song “Still Fighting It”

Driving around town, I keep seeing familiar faces but I don’t remember any names. I’m still trying to convince everyone here that I am no longer a shy tomboy. I was 19 when I left, now I’m on the verge of 22. So much has changed since then.

I feel like I left Seattle right when I became completely comfortable there. I had my routine. Walking to Pike Place for breakfast on the weekends, parties in the U District on Saturday nights, exploring Fremont on Sunday mornings.

I hate change, I don’t like the idea of being in between two homes. But I’m determined to make the best of things, wherever I end up.
